What type of martial arts should I learn?
I am a 17 year old female and I’m going off to college next year. I want to take a martial arts class that teaches me self defense and is a good workout at the same time. I was told not to take Jujitsu because that is a type of martial arts that deals with overpowering an opponent and because I am only 54′ I will not be able to overpower an opponent. Is this true and what type of martial arts would be best for me? Thanks!

What type of Martial arts should I start taking classes in?
I prefer a type that is STRICTLY self-defense. I have taken classes in TaiChi before, but I would like to practice something that is a little more physically energetic so to speak. However, I have heard that TaiChi is the Grandmaster of Martial Arts. Is this true? I am looking for something that has a philisophy as well as a physical discipline. I do find Aikido very interesting. I guess what I would be looking for would be a soft style?

How can martial arts be considered sports?
To me, a martial art is a system of combat for use in battle/war only put into an art form (hence the word martial). This means that martial arts can use any weapon, including the body. Martial arts are much more than self-defense, but can be used as such. Sports are games with rules and regulations for safety. Real martial arts dont have rules. Are you seriously going to say in a real fight sorry, you cant do that becuase its cheating. What defenatly makes martial arts not sports is the fact of spiritual development. Real martial artists are beyond a mere athlete. Martial artists strengthen their spirit to increase their fighting potential. This MMA isnt a real martial art. All they do is grab their opponent and pound their face in. Thats an art? Many will say that martial arts wont work in a real fight because they dont know what real martial arts are. I am very frustrated on this topic because such a complex and beautiful thing is dying out. Please help me out here.
Also, there is this notion that a black belt is a master. That is true to a point. In modern martial arts, a black belt far from a master. The requirements of becoming a black belt are dropping more and more each year. Ive seen so called masters that seem like they have only practiced the art for a few months. Form is excelent, but fighting skill and spirit is crap.

What is the best martial arts style to learn?
I am more interested in a more physical, strenuous style for self defense/fighting.
Can anyone recommend a style, organization, dojo, etc. that they like? It would be greatly appreciated.
I have already investigated a respectable ninjitsu dojo and a place (White Dragon Martial Arts) that teaches Choy Li Fut kung fu, but would still like some input.

What martial arts style is the most athletic?
I was thinking of going back to martial arts, and was wondering what martial art for requires the most physical fitness, and in turn will give me an intense, dynamic workout. It being a practical self-defense style is key, however exercise is my first priority.
