History of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

December 31, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

A group of Japanese martial artists, the Kodokan, is the original source of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Kano Jigoro, one of the members of the Kodokan, sent out his followers to different parts of the world to spread the knowledge of his teachings. Mitsuyo Maeda was sent to Brazil and he began to share the art of what would become known as jiu-jitsu to the citizens there. Though the martial art was actually closer to judo, the name was not as important as the actions.

One of the people that Maeda associated with was a man with the last name Gracie. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is highly associated with the Gracie name and this is where it began. Carlos Gracie began learning from Maeda and then in 1921, passed his knowledge on to his brothers, including the youngest, H

Principles of Gracie Jiujitsu

December 30, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

Ever since Royce Gracie won three out of the first four Ultimate Fighting Championships, Brazilian jiu-jitsu academies have been springing up all over. You can find many different styles but Gracie Jiujitsu is probably the most famous. This discipline takes the martial art very seriously, and has at its core a philosophy on how to live one’s life in order to achieve the best results on the mat, and how to be more complete as a human being.

The first principle of Gracie Jiujitsu is about control. In a fight, this involves being the one who will dictate what happens during the fight. Part of this is in physically controlling your opponent and restricting his movements to what you want him to do; the other part is the self-control that you need to impose upon yourself so that you can make the best choices to win the fight. This is personal training at its best, and it is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is expected that you are able to exercise enough control to eat properly and take care of your health.

Learning martial art techniques takes a lot of patience to do so successfully, and this is the second principle of Gracie Jiujitsu. Patience is about waiting and about timing. There have been plenty of fights that have been won by the superior fighter simply waiting out his opponent. Looking for the right moment to execute a technique is also a part of patience, as a rushed attack is less likely to succeed. This philosophy is part of developing strong relationships with the people in our lives, and avoiding impulsive and irrational decisions.

The final of Gracie Jiujitsu principles is efficiency. This is particularly important for a fight, since the foundation of this discipline is built on the assumption that you will be fighting someone stronger and bigger than yourself. Jiu jitsu schools will often promote the idea that you drain your opponent of his or her energy while conserving your own strength in order to finish the fight. This applies to daily living as well, with the idea that you are able to maximize your results through an efficient application of effort, whether it is in business or social situations.

As you can see, Gracie Jiujitsu goes well beyond the mat, and really the only people who will succeed in this discipline are the ones who are able to live their lives according to the ideals that the discipline is based upon. Brazilian jiu jitsu academies are everywhere nowadays, and you can probably find one that won’t require a commitment on your part to lead your life outside of the dojo according to the Gracie Principles. But whether that will result in you being a better fighter is unlikely, since how you are on the mat is not so different from how you are when off it.

Info On Martial Arts Training

There are different types of martial arts like karate and Kung Fu. Over the years, many styles have been elaborated on and new forms of combat have developed. There is for sure a style out there for each and every one of us. I personally favor Kung Fu, with Bruce Lee being a personal idol of mine. This form of combat brings so much to the health of the body, mind, and the spirit.

Martial Art Classes

For those who have never attempted to learn a martial art, the whole thing might at first appear overrated and impossible to get into unless you sport a ripped set of muscles and superhero amounts of energy. We get this from watching the likes of Jackie Chan in the movies - his stunts and fighting moves are so extreme, how could we ever get to that standard - and is it worth even trying? Well to be fair, those who are so advanced in their style of combat have got there by a lot of hard work and commitment, in order to fulfill their ultimate dream.

However, everyone has to start somewhere and whatever level of fitness you are currently at, martial arts can help you in more ways than you think. Let’s have a quick look at some of the benefits that comes with learning a martial art.

Federal Way Martial Arts

Probably the first thing that comes to mind is the benefits on your health and fitness. Unlike other sports and fitness programs, choosing a martial art will pass all expectations. In terms of health, it will not only help to prevent common physical illnesses, but will improve mental health too. You will enjoy a better night’s sleep, a clearer mind to think and work with more gusto and an ability to remain calm, yet vigilant. Your level of fitness will increase; you will become stronger, more agile and you will learn to endure when times get tough. Everything that you learn can be used in everyday situations and boost productivity in the work.

Martial arts is not for anyone who wishes to use it wrongly against innocent people. Martial arts should be used to build on self-confidence and not to intimidate others. However, self-defense is something that we could all do with educating ourselves with. You just never know when you might be faced with a situation that requires you to defend yourself. Self-defense is a protective measure of which all the basics and more can be learnt alongside your chosen martial art.

If you are new to martial arts, it would be a wise idea to follow the advice and training program of someone in the know - a professional instructor. Before you choose an instructor, do a little background research. Anyone who doesn’t have accreditation from a national or international association, with the authority to teach should be avoided. If you have the opportunity to see them at work, this can show you their teaching style and philosophy. They should never be too demanding of a student, abusive or try to humiliate. As well as the combat itself, they should teach about discipline and healthy living in all areas of life.

Some Simple Rules to the Sport of Soccer.

August 31, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

Soccer is a great game that is easy to learn and really fun to play. There are many rules that go along with it but if you are willing to stay with them, you will have a great time with it. The following are pointers on how to play the amazing game of soccer. Soccer can be really distant from many other sports and it can also be really similar. You will need not any martial arts supplies, martial arts uniform, a football helmet, or a lacrosse rod. This game is, in its own way, uniquespecial and different and indeed revered all over the world as one of the best games out there.

One of the first things you will need to remember in soccer is to only use your feet. There are only a few instances where the touching of the soccer ball with your hands is okay or tolerated. These are really few indeed though. One of these instances is when a player called the “goalie” is trying to stop a ball from striking the inside of the net at either of the opposing ends. Each team gets its own goalie that can guard balls with any parts of their bodies but mainly their hands. Another instance where you can use your hands is when the ball goes out of the lines. This is when the players dash to the sidelines and throw the ball in to one of their teammates.

Another rule in the great game of soccer is there is no pushing. This rule, however, has many rules on it and variations. You can not just simply push a player to get them off of the ball, but you can, however, lean to them with your shoulder. This makes them fall off balance without anything actually being illegal. You also can’t simply trip another player. This will definitely get you carded, which is our next point that we will come to in the next paragraph.

When you get in trouble for doing illegal or dangerous things you will get a card from the referee. There are two different colors for both of the cards. There is a red card, which you get when you have done something really bad or really harmful. Some of these things might be kick another player in a hurtful place, or talk back to a referee or another teammate. A yellow card is less severe and comes when a player does a dangerous play or does a minor offense like talks back just a little bit or says one mean word to another or even stalling.

Soccer is fun and can be really tough but beneficial if you get the hang of it. It is a great workout, and it gets rid of tension of you get in a match with another team. Many people start it because of the respect they have for the game due to the skill it requires mentally and physically to play it.

How to win their Heart on an Outing.

August 30, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

There are several things to remember when goingheading out on a date. If you remember these few things, you will, no doubt, have a perfect time out with your partner. One thing for sure is that you will never be taking them to do karate Gi and buying them karate uniforms. This date is special and the more time you put into it, the more happiness you will get out of it ultimately. If you stick to these helpful little tips, you will be grateful for them for the fortune they will bring you to your relationship with one that you are to love.

The first thing you will need to do is to take them out to a lovely dinner. This is a sure way to win their heart and it will impress them every time if you know what to do and look for in a restaurant. When you are going to select an eating place, make sure it is classy, but not too classy. If you want the relationship to last, the way to do it is to take them to a comfy area that tells them that you like them but are not trying way too hard to over impress them. Be sure that the restaurant isn’t too distant, and isn’t ridiculously over expensive. If this happens you may not be able to afford all of it and that would be humiliating.

The next thing to do is to be very respectable. No guy or girl likes when a date is rude, gross, unmannered, or disrespectful. This is almost a positive way to have the date end badly or very early for that matter. When the girl goes to sit down, you can pull out her chair if you think that’s what shed like, but make certain to always be the last one to sit. This shows that you desire to make sure that she is comfortable before you get settled at all. She will like this a lot and think of you as a nice man.

Lastly, you should be the one that pays for the first date. When you pay it shows the girl that you like making her content and that you are willing to sacrifice money and wealth just for her pleasure. You can also take her to a flick later for the classic approach, but if you want to get more special, then bring her somewhere exciting and a place all your own. Maybe you have a favorite view of the city at night or an adorable spot where there is a pond or lake. These are all great ideas for a cute date that will be sure to impress your partner on your first date.

So many couples these days don’t express to each other they appreciate one another. With a perfect first date, you can always start off on a great foot. This will be the best way to win your sweetheart over to the fullest on your first impression. They will be thankful for the thought you put into it and how much time you spent on it trying to just please the other.

In real life street fighting doesn’t last very long at all when at least one of the opponentsinvolved is using effective self defense techniquesevolved from any one of the various major martial artsthat exist today. Although street fightingis not something that most martial artist make a habit of engaging in, should the need arise, one can be assured that having the knowledge that comes from practicing effective self defense techniquessuch as those found in the martial arts fighting styles listed below will give you a greater sense of confidence, should you ever have to confront an attacker or bully in your life…. common bare handed street fighting moves don’t stand a chance against someone who is skilled in one or more of the various martial arts. Short of having self defense products hidden in your purse or pocket at the time,… or underneath your belt, you’re better off actually learning some effective martial arts techniques that would give you the edge and a great deal of confidence should you happen to forget, … and leave your pepper spray or pocket knife at home.

With all that said, one might be faced with this question, “What is the best form of martial arts?…”

The most well known forms of martial arts are the ones that have proven themselves to be significantly effective throughout hundreds of years of existence and practice. The most common forms known the world over have endured to this day mainly due to there effectiveness in actual use in self defense or their use in fighting or combat.

The most common forms include the following:
Aikido, Bando Thaing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Capoeira, Chanbara, Choy Li Fut, Gatka, Haidong Gumdo, Hapkido, Hwa Rang Do, Iaido,Jeet Kune Do, Judo,Kandoshin, Karat, Kendo, Krav Maga, Kuk Sool on, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Ninjitsu, Sambo, Tae Kwon Do, Taekwondo, Tai Chi Chuan, Vajra Mukti, Wing Chun

Some of the more popular forms are described here:

Aikido: Aikido takes the opponent’s movements towards you and allows you to use circular blocks and defense tactics to direct the aggressor onto the ground via throws and pins, versus kicks and punches.

Hapkido: Often mistaken as Aikido because of its similarity in name and translation, this art combines the Aikido art of maneuvering an opponents body motions and momentum against him with kicks of that which one might find in Tae Kwon Do.

Iaido: a Japanese fighting art that is based upon the use and mastery of the sword as the primary weapon of attack and defense.

Jeet Kune Do: This was a martial arts style that was very much made popular by the late Bruce Lee. Combining different forms of martial arts, this art encompassed flexibility, being fluid in motion, and constantly learning and changing so as to ultimately have at one’s disposal an infinite arsenal of moves and tactics to choose from,… greatly increasing ones chances in defeating his/her opponent.

Judo: Judo was originally evolved from Jujitsu. Judo took from this art and focused mainly on a form of wrestling, which involved throwing a falling.

Jujitsu: Jujitsu today is one of the most effective martial arts fighting styles adopted by an ever-increasing audience of serious fighters. It is no wonder that it is said that three other of the major martial arts styles has it’ s roots from this single one all-encompassing fighting art. Each one, Judo, Aikido, and Hapkido are said to have evolved from this all-encompassing fighting style. Once mastered, one can become ultimately in control of virtually any fight. Using a variety of strikes, locking techniques, kicks, grappling, etc.. it would be hard to defeat a master of this art, if one were to only master one of the other major fighting styles.

The Stunning Ring: Self Defense Wrapped Around Your Finger

September 27, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

Choosing a self defense product can be overwhelming. So when making this important decision ask yourself, “How quickly will I be able to defend myself with this product?”.

An attacker often waits for that person who is alone and unaware. They look for vulnerability. Most people do not have the luxury of a personal body guard, so you must protect yourself.

In the event of an attack you have very limited time to react. You will not have time fumble through your purse or bag for that pepper spray or stun gun.

You need the power to stop an attacker at your fingertips. You can do that with the Stunning Ring.

The Stunning Ring is a self defense pepper spray ring. It is creatively designed to fit a man or woman; sizes 6-14. Choose between silver or gold plating, complimented with a genuine onyx stone.

Because it is disguised as a ring an attacker would never know you have pepper spray. The ring can be worn all the time or you can slip it on when necessary. The Stunning Ring is convenient because it will be there when you need it.

The ring is worn on the index or middle finger of your dominant hand with the safety latch closest to your thumb. Simply point the ring at an attackers face. Use your thumb to release the safety and depress the actuator.

The Stunning Ring will release a 10% pepper spray formula with a heat rating of 2 million scoville heat units, 400 times hotter than a jalapeno pepper! The pepper spray canister has a 2-3 second burst with a range of about 12 inches and is replaceable.

In addition to causing an attacker pain, the Stunning Ring formula will swell the mucous membranes, which makes breathing difficult, and swells the veins in the eyes, causing the eyes to shut. Coughing, choking, sneezing, severe burning sensations to the eyes, nose, throat and skin, and nausea are also effects that will last 20-30 minutes but cause no permanent damage.

Once you have the attacker under control you can safely run for help.

I hope that you never find yourself in a situation where your safety or the safety of your loved ones is compromised. But I also hope that you can protect yourself if you do.

The Fluid Motion of the Snake Lends Itself Well to Kung Fu

The Fluid Motion of the Snake Lends Itself Well to the Art of Kung Fu
———-
If youve read my articles, you know I have two passions: Learning various Kung Fu styles and seeing them performed on television.

Ive been doing snake style Kung Fu for almost eight years. Once I moved into Kung Fu styles, snake was the first one I learned, because it had a lot of similarities to jiu jitsu. Like jiu jitsu, snake style kung fu is all about transmitting core body strength from the abdomen to the arms, and uses a lot of joint locks and grappling moves. Unlike jiu jitsu, it uses a more open stance, and tries for greater flow in motion, with more arm strikes and kicks. Particularly, it incorporates several weapon elements, including techniques applicable to sword use. It contrasts with a lot of contemporary styles from China, in the focus on blocks, throws and hitting from weird angles.

Martial arts with applicability to swords are totally cool. Before we get to the sharp, pointy things, lets talk about snakes. The reasoning behind snake style kung fu, as was taught to me, is that from the fluid motions of snakes, you can learn a lot about balance, body motions and striking power. Some people focus on the cobra strikes, trying to emulate the lightning quick attack of a cobra with an open palmed strike. Others focus on the nature of the python, which draws in to joint locks and throws and immobilizations. All of them focus on feints you learn not just the strikes, but the techniques to mask which strike youre throwing, or which joint lock youre throwing. Snake style is sort of like a cross between poker and chess. Not that youre going slowly enough to think while youre doing it since its all learned at the muscle memory level, but that youve got moves, counter moves and bluffs, all running at once.

Snake style kung fu isnt the most effective on defensive blocks. The blocks, parries and lateral motions are fundamental at best. Snake is a more offensive style, in the Northern version, which is what I learned. (Northern snake style is largely what got used for the cinematography for Sir Tes style the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.) Wudang Mountain, the superb school in the film, is renowned for producing great Snake Style Kung Fu artists.

Southern snake style is a much more recent variation, and dates back to the late 1800s. Its a mixture of classic Shao Lin forms, with harder, direct punches mixed with Wing Chun movements for a bit of fluidity. You can tell the practitioners apart, because the Southern stylists have a much more open and upright stance, and focus more on a variety of punches instead of a balanced set routine of punches, joint locks and holds. I won’t get into the discussion about which one is superior, since Im obviously biased having gone for the more traditional form of the art. Both styles are satisfying and will train you in solid martial arts techniques.
