The Best Anti-Anxiety Relief

July 12, 2010 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

Anxiety and panic attacks are extremely significant issues that can sometimes be difficult to deal with for the person afflicted. There are many types of anti-anxiety medication since drugs are usually the first to use when suffering from an intense and unexpected panic attack. However, tranquilizers don’t offer a cure for the health problem and they also have the disadvantage of causing all sorts of side effects. Here are some of the unpleasant and sometimes paradoxical adverse reactions related with the administration of anti-anxiety medication in general. While the main benefit from their use is the state of calm and relaxation, sometimes drugs can relax you to the extent that you feel drowsy all the time.

Slow reflexes, poor coordination and fatigue are the anti-anxiety medication side effects resulting from the drugs blocking some specific chemical secretion in the brain. Some people also complain about dizziness, confusion, disorientation and impaired thinking, not to mention the impossibility to operate machines and drive. Be certain that you constantly check with your physician before you employ any medicine. The long-term use of anti-anxiety medication can also cause depression in very severe forms that push one on the verge of suicide. Drugs do eliminate the anxiety discomfort, but they also make it impossible for the sufferer to experience pain or pleasure thus affecting the quality of life in very many ways.

Some reactions to anti anxiety medication are truly paradoxical. For instance, the use of tranquilizers aims at inducing relaxation and calm, but in certain cases drugs can increase the agitation and the irritability level. Plus, mania, hostility and even rage have been noticed in some cases. Although very rare and equally dangerous, aggressive behaviors and hallucinations are also possible as a result of anti-anxiety medication use. The majority of peculiar reactions to anti-anxiety drugs are usually encountered with the elderly and children, as well as with patients with developmental disabilities.

Therefore, the choice of the treatment requires utmost care and it usually involves the use of a complementary therapy rather than the administration of drugs. anti anxiety medication only eliminates or alleviates symptoms without bringing an improvement to the health condition in any way. The factor or the problem responsible for the panic attacks is still there, somehow camouflaged, and once you cease taking the medication, anxiety will be back all over again. Therefore, all the treatment efforts should be directed towards proper diagnosis and identification of the causes behind the disorder. Your own anxiety and panic attacks can certainly be dealt with, but first you must be certain that the path you select is the true one for you yourself.

Basic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training

January 1, 2010 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

Brazilian jiu jitsu training is not really for the casual participant. Generally, the instructors will want a significant commitment from their students, and if it is a Gracie jiu jitsu school that you are attending, then this commitment will extend to how you conduct yourself outside of the dojo as well. The seriousness that those involved with Brazilian jiu jitsu show is a result of being at the top of the mixed martial arts world. Despite the intensity usually involved in the training, most classes follow a structure similar to any other martial art.

Basic Brazilian jiu jitsu training, as with advanced training and most forms of structured physical activities, will almost always begin with some form of a warm-up. If you are new to jiu jitsu, then the instructor will most likely focus on a lighter warm-up session. A lighter session will usually involve some basic exercises like push-ups and sit-ups, and perhaps laps around the gym. Stretching also happens once your body has warmed up a bit. A heavier warm-up would be longer and really designed to break a sweat and help you with conditioning for endurance.

After the warm-up, the next part of Brazilian jiu jitsu training usually focuses on techniques. Certain moves will be chosen by the instructor and broken apart so that students can perfect each stage. Mistakes are ironed out at this point, and the instructor will try to spend time with each student to make sure things are being done properly. More experienced students are often paired with newer ones, so that the former can assist the latter. This is especially important in larger classes where the instructor can hardly give everyone personal training at the same time.

After the warm-up and the practice part of Brazilian jiu jitsu training comes the hands-on fighting. When you have a partner working with you, techniques are easier to execute and fighters can become complacent and over confident. By including a sparring session at the end of a lesson, students will need to apply their newly learned techniques against an opponent who will not know what their next move will be, and who will not be so willing to let them win.

So if you are prepared to sweat a lot and devote a significant amount of time to working hard during your Brazilian jiu jitsu training sessions, and to spend time practicing and staying in shape outside of your lessons, then you are more likely to get a better result. You will feel stronger physically and you will also find that your mental outlook on things is likely to change as well. Brazilian jiu jitsu is not just a sport - it’s a way of life.

History of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

December 31, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

A group of Japanese martial artists, the Kodokan, is the original source of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Kano Jigoro, one of the members of the Kodokan, sent out his followers to different parts of the world to spread the knowledge of his teachings. Mitsuyo Maeda was sent to Brazil and he began to share the art of what would become known as jiu-jitsu to the citizens there. Though the martial art was actually closer to judo, the name was not as important as the actions.

One of the people that Maeda associated with was a man with the last name Gracie. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is highly associated with the Gracie name and this is where it began. Carlos Gracie began learning from Maeda and then in 1921, passed his knowledge on to his brothers, including the youngest, H

Principles of Gracie Jiujitsu

December 30, 2009 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment

Ever since Royce Gracie won three out of the first four Ultimate Fighting Championships, Brazilian jiu-jitsu academies have been springing up all over. You can find many different styles but Gracie Jiujitsu is probably the most famous. This discipline takes the martial art very seriously, and has at its core a philosophy on how to live one’s life in order to achieve the best results on the mat, and how to be more complete as a human being.

The first principle of Gracie Jiujitsu is about control. In a fight, this involves being the one who will dictate what happens during the fight. Part of this is in physically controlling your opponent and restricting his movements to what you want him to do; the other part is the self-control that you need to impose upon yourself so that you can make the best choices to win the fight. This is personal training at its best, and it is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is expected that you are able to exercise enough control to eat properly and take care of your health.

Learning martial art techniques takes a lot of patience to do so successfully, and this is the second principle of Gracie Jiujitsu. Patience is about waiting and about timing. There have been plenty of fights that have been won by the superior fighter simply waiting out his opponent. Looking for the right moment to execute a technique is also a part of patience, as a rushed attack is less likely to succeed. This philosophy is part of developing strong relationships with the people in our lives, and avoiding impulsive and irrational decisions.

The final of Gracie Jiujitsu principles is efficiency. This is particularly important for a fight, since the foundation of this discipline is built on the assumption that you will be fighting someone stronger and bigger than yourself. Jiu jitsu schools will often promote the idea that you drain your opponent of his or her energy while conserving your own strength in order to finish the fight. This applies to daily living as well, with the idea that you are able to maximize your results through an efficient application of effort, whether it is in business or social situations.

As you can see, Gracie Jiujitsu goes well beyond the mat, and really the only people who will succeed in this discipline are the ones who are able to live their lives according to the ideals that the discipline is based upon. Brazilian jiu jitsu academies are everywhere nowadays, and you can probably find one that won’t require a commitment on your part to lead your life outside of the dojo according to the Gracie Principles. But whether that will result in you being a better fighter is unlikely, since how you are on the mat is not so different from how you are when off it.
