What is a good martial arts style that will give me a good workout, but help me build muscle?

citrusgal asked:

I HATE doing cardio, so I think if I try something fun like martial arts, I’ll be able to get through it, is that true? I’m pushing 30, so I want something that a beginner at my age will feel comfortable getting into. I want something that will really help me tone up and define my muscles. Also, I have mild asthma, so I can’t really keep up with super strenuous exercises. Any suggestions?

boxing is EXCELLENT for caridio, stamina and strength building and so is pancion, the traditional greek wrestling. I covered wrestling for two years in college and I can tell you REAL greco roman wrestling is a nasty and EFFECTIVE self defense art.

do Tae Kwon Do…it’s really simple…and i went from being the whimpiest girl in school to one of the strongest! it really builds up the muscles in your legs, and if u try hard enough…ur arms…

u want to build muscle but not hav to work on cardio? -_- good luck with that one. if you want to do martial arts that will help build muscle, i would suggest something like judo since ur tossing ppl and it takes a bit of strength. but its goin to push you. any good martial arts skool will push you. so if you really dont like getting tired and doing cardio…sry buddy but idk wat to suggest then

any good instructor of any style of Martial Art, will work with you, so I suggest looking at all the schools in your area and finding the one that you are willing to apply yourself to and go for it… good luck

Ide have to say wrestling specifically greco roman just because of the fact that the workouts while basicly cardio based it will not seem like your going no where like running or on a machine. Throwing and being thrown around by someone your size will put on muscle fast and give you the cardio workout you probably need without you realizing it.

Any martial art school worth their salt will integrate conditioning into their curriculum such as push ups, sit ups, warming up jogging a little etc.
Even if they don’t you can show up a little early or stay after and do those yourself right?
Also depends on where you want the muscle. Arts that use more punching are going to build your upper section more obviously and vice versus.

Martial arts will help you out. But, muscle building will be done on your own. MA can help you with tone, but not bulk. In order to build muscle, you need to add weight training which is not part of a normal martial arts program.
(I know, some programs have weight training facilities, or are attached to gyms, but neither are they the norm, nor would they be considered ‘normal’.) Basically, you can only add so much muscle mass by doing pushups.
